Rolls-Royce assigns two patents to Mantic Point Solutions Ltd and becomes a shareholder in the business

[October 3, 2005, Leeds] In September 2005, Rolls-Royce assigned two patents to Mantic Point Solutions Limited (Mantic Point) and became a shareholder in the business. The patents extend Mantic Point's intellectual property (IP) and open up new opportunities in the passenger transportation market.

The patents were a product of the Rolls-Royce 'StreamThru' concept which Mantic Point will now take to market as a turnkey service for managing the flow of airline passengers from home to the departure gate. StreamThru keeps passengers informed with relevant, personalised information about their flight, and provides new value-added service opportunities for airlines, airports and other travel industry stakeholders.

Mantic Point provided the core application, Chaperone, on which StreamThru was built. The two companies then decided to bring together their respective IP to develop new markets and to extend the functionality of Chaperone - Mantic Point´s existing application, aimed at the supply chain and healthcare markets.

Commenting on the news, Mike Atherton, Managing Director of Mantic Point said: “This puts Mantic Point in a strong position as we move forward into the next stage of our growth. Over the coming months, you will see Mantic Point deliver exciting new innovations for customers in the supply chain and healthcare markets, and we look forward to working with airports and airlines to develop and evolve StreamThru.”

Atherton added: “Our existing flow management applications use real-time business intelligence techniques to combine data from sensory networks (e.g. RFID and barcodes) and operational systems...to bridge the gap between what should be happening according to the digital world, and what is really happening in the physical world. StreamThru is a natural extension of these concepts.”

StreamThru: The Passenger Concierge Service

Acting as a virtual concierge for travellers, StreamThru bridges the information gap between passengers, airport operators, and airlines. This information gap is caused because airlines and airport operators don´t know which stage passengers have reached in the departure process.

By rewarding passengers for sharing information about their whereabouts, all parties gain significant benefits:

  • Passengers enjoy a less stressful and more rewarding travel experience
  • Airport operators gain the opportunity to increase their retail revenues and introduce new value-added services
  • Airlines gain insight into their passengers´ whereabouts to drive improvements in punctuality

StreamThru maintains a coarse grained view of passenger location (e.g. off airport, landside, security, airside, departure gate)- using simple mobile phone based technology off airport, and 2D barcode or RFID technology in the terminal building. At the transition point between each phase (e.g. landside to security) mobile, 2D barcode or RFID technology is used to update the passenger´s location.

Using this information, StreamThru enables new passenger focused services, including:

  • Active monitoring of security queues to pro-actively assist passengers who are running late
  • Permission based marketing to deliver targeted, relevant offers to passengers (e.g. if a passenger is running late on their journey to the airport, StreamThru could send them a text message offering a chargeable valet parking service)
  • Personalised flight information displays within the airport that respond to the presence of StreamThru enabled boarding passes. These displays show departure information and “way finding” information
  • A paperless retail voucher system, allowing passengers to use their StreamThru enabled boarding pass to redeem offers at the point of sale. This eliminates the burden of managing paper vouchers
  • Visibility of which stage passengers have reached in the departure process, allowing airlines to identify and proactively alert passengers at risk of missing their flight (e.g. by text message, or local public address announcement).
