TOP FIVE PREDICTIONS FOR 2009
Innovative concierge service provider, Mantic Point, reveals its top five predictions for the mobile travel market in 2009.
The m-travel revolution may be in full swing, but with the British economy on the verge of recession and increasing fears that people will stop travelling – what lies in wait for the mobile travel market in 2009?
Mike Atherton, managing director at Mantic Point, reveals his predictions for the year ahead:
- 1) Travel brands will start exploiting their unique access to customers who are travelling using mobile. The economic climate will impact the entire travel market in 2009 which means maximising customer value at each stage of the journey will become increasingly important to revenue growth.
- 2) The travel market will reject mobile as a booking channel. It will focus on post-ticket events as a means to increase ancillary revenue and improve customer service.
- 3) 2009 will be a 'launch and learn' year for travel brands. There will be a migration from SMS to mobile web applications as consumers continue to upgrade to newer ‘web-friendly’ mobiles:
- Use of SMS itinerary will become mainstream. Low cost brands will also use this to target ancillary revenue streams
- Consumers will be able to tailor their mobile service by selecting their preferred content and delivery channel
- First location specific services due to more devices with GPS and Wi-fi
- Development of private consumer sites where customers access personalised information
- 4) In-house IT innovation slowdown. As resource cuts start to become more and more common among businesses, travel brands will need to find creative ways of partnering to prevent the pace of innovation slowing and consequent delays to IT developments.
- 5) Consumer demand for personalised information will increase. Travel brands that persist with first generation mobile services will lose out.
